The plan to start up a new band began taking shape last spring, when Woodburn High School's mariachi group performed during an annual multicultural mul·ti·cul·tur·al adj. 1. The Woodburn band - which is now in its fifth year and typically plays 20 to 25 shows annually - is Oregon's only high school mariachi troupe. He developed a course curriculum and gained school board approval to begin teaching a mariachi class next January. The school district is providing $1,000 for the new program. School officials are now working to raise the remaining money needed to get the band started. Heading up that effort is the school's multicultural liaison, Elena Espinoza. "This is a really positive thing for this school, which has a huge richness in culture," Espinoza said. Holt said he expects that the mariachi band will include a combination of novice and experienced student musicians. The traditional ensemble has several violins, two trumpets and a conventional guitar, along with a deep-voiced guitar known as a guitarron, a harp and a round-backed guitar called the vihuela. Holt and Espinoza anticipate that the Springfield High band will include students of various ethnicities. "One of the reasons I wanted to do this was because when the Woodburn group came here, we saw Hispanic Hispanic Multiculture A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race Social medicine Any of 17 major Latino subcultures, concentrated in California, Texas, Chicago, Miam, NY, and elsewhere and Caucasian students interacting in a positive way," Holt said. "It wasn't something that just one group was doing. It was students from all different backgrounds playing in their band. That's what we expect will happen here." Woodburn High band instructor Brian Gingerich said his school's mariachi group has performed at events throughout the state. "The amount of interest that people have in our band is incredible," Gingerich said. "I get calls all the time for them to play." His students are well aware that Springfield High is planning to form the state's second high school mariachi band. "They're saying that the kids in Springfield could be better (than the Woodburn group), because they have an orchestra program where they can pull from the violins," said Gingerich, who plans to meet soon with Holt to discuss Springfield's plan. While Holt believes his mariachi band eventually will become a sought-after act, he has a modest goal for the group's first term. "I'm just hoping to do one concert next spring at the school," Holt said. "But I anticipate that our plate is going to get really full, really quick. And I look forward to that." MARIACHI BAND AID Springfield High School officials are asking community members to donate $1 each to purchase instruments and uniforms for a student mariachi band. About $4,000 is being collected for the program, which begins in January. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to Springfield High School, 875 Seventh St., Springfield, OR 97477.
