School Bus Safety.

About 22 million kids ride school buses every school day in the United States. It's one of the safest ways to travel to and from school. But accidents do happen--and sometimes children are badly hurt in these accidents.

The good news is that with a little bit of knowledge, most of these accidents can be avoided. Here's how you can be safe when you ride the bus.

[check] Cross the street at least ten feet in front of the bus. Your bus driver has a "blind spot" directly in front of the bus; he may not be able to see you. Just because you can see the bus doesn't mean the bus driver can see you! Move at least ten feet away from the front of the bus when getting on or off.

[check] Stay out of the street while waiting for the bus. Horseplay that involves being pushed off the curb or running out from between cars can result in a serious accident.

[check] Remove loose drawstrings or ties on jackets and sweatshirts that could get caught on the bus handrail or in the door-be careful with bookbags and purses, too.

[check] Remain seated and keep the aisles clear. Keep your head and arms inside the bus.
