MATH MARVEL: Theo Johnson-Freyd, who just completed his junior year at South Eugene High School, has been invited to a one-month, all-expenses-paid Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program at the University of Nebraska. The program is for Olympiad qualifiers who may be eligible to compete in the International Olympiad later, either this summer or next. Johnson-Freyd was also one of only two Oregon students to be awarded a $1,000 college scholarship based on his score on the American Invitational Mathematics Examination The AIME (or American Invitational Mathematics Examination) is a 15-question test given since 1983 to those who rank in the top 5% (or score at least 100) on the AMC 12 high school mathematics contest (formerly known as the AHSME), and those who rank in the top 1% (or score earlier this year. ESSAY WINNER: Kayley Richmond, who just finished her sophomore year at North Eugene High School, took third place in the Oregon Liquor Control Commission's 2002 Student Essay Contest, ninth-to-12th-grade category.
