During the school year, 13% of teachers hold second jobs outside of the school system, working in everything from real estate to bartending. Over the summer, this number increases to 19%, and that doesn't include the teachers who sign on for summer school gigs. American Federation of Teachers spokesperson George Jackson has said, "I think it just underscores the point that many teachers are underpaid and have to do things to make ends meet."
