Sir Richard Atkinson Robinson
, president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Scholastic, said, "We are honored that Arvind Kumar has become Scholastic's managing director in India, for he has the vision and the energy to bring high-quality books at low prices to millions of Indian children using Scholastic's school-based distribution concepts."

Scholastic is beginning operations in India because of the opportunity provided by the country's rapid economic growth, an expanding middle class with high educational goals for its children, and the country's widespread use of English as the language of education and business. The children's book market in India is growing rapidly because parents actively prepare their children for highly competitive private school and university systems.

Scholastic believes that its school-based book club and fair distribution channel will help provide parents, teachers and children with direct access to a wide range of high-quality reading and educational materials from Scholastic and other leading publishers around the world.

For more than 75 years, Scholastic has been committed to creating quality educational materials for students and teachers. The company is one of the leading publishers and distributors of children's books, classroom and professional magazines, and other educational products. Scholastic also publishes educational software and produces children's and family-oriented video and television programming.
