 (0439088067, $16.99) tells of pre-teen Maggie, whose father loses all their money in a fight with an Erie Canal Erie Canal, artificial waterway, c.360 mi (580 km) long; connecting New York City with the Great Lakes via the Hudson River. Locks were built to overcome the 571-ft (174-m) difference between the level of the river and that of Lake Erie.  bully, placing the family in danger of losing their boat. The only way out is to work harder--but when her elders are arrested it's up to Maggie and her mother and brother to race against time to get the job done. All are excellent stories of kids facing the impossible and achieving despite all. Grades 4-7 will find them particularly involving.
