The 1990 exhibition, hosted by Chicago's State Center of Illinois, featured 525 national award-winning works--chosen as the finest of more than 200,000 submitted. Entries submitted in fourteen media categories were judged and exhibited in sixty-eight regions across the country. More than 25,000 entries won finalist awards and were forwarded to New York City New York City: see New York, city.

"Our national judges continue to be surprised, impressed and awed by the work they screen on the national level," said Chuck Wentzel, director of the Scholastic Awards Program. "In addition to technical proficiency, our judges look for the student's voice. It is amazing to witness the thoughts, feelings and ideas being expressed by students through their artwork."
