Applicants may be full-time or part-time students. McMillan Doctoral Scholarship applications will be reviewed by the Foundation's Scientific Review Committee in September 2002, and by the Foundation's Board of Trustees board of trustees Politics The posse of thugs who oversee an institution's administration. Research Grant

The deadline for completed 2003 Research Grant applications is August 16, 2002. The maximum amount for these 1-year research grants is $40,000. Up to 4 research grants may be funded in 2003 for research in:

* Evaluating the effectiveness of physical therapist interventions related to questions 3.6 or 3.7 of APTA's Clinical Research Agenda.

* Evaluating the effectiveness of physical therapist interventions for older adults.

* Evaluating the effectiveness of common physical therapist interventions for children with high incidence of special needs.

* Evaluating the effectiveness of physical therapist interventions.

The 2003 grant year is January 1, 2003 through December 31, 2003. Recipients will be notified in November 2002.

The purpose of the Foundation's Research grant program is to fund research studies by emerging investigators. An emerging investigator is an individual who has had some previous research experience and who has completed postprofessional graduate or postgraduate work, or who is beginning in a new field of research or making strategic changes in research direction within an existing line of research. The intent of the Foundation is to fund the highest-quality, scientifically based, and clinically relevant research with priority given to projects having the most immediate clinical application.

Questions about McMillan Scholarship or Research Grant application guidelines or about the application process should be directed to Lucy Dickson, Scientific Program Administrator, Foundation for Physical Therapy at lucydickson@apta.org.

Foundation Forum: "How to Get It and Where It Goes"

The Foundation Forum, "How to Get It and Where It Goes," held on June 7, 2002, at APTA's Annual Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, provided valuable information on how to improve one's chances of being awarded Foundation funding. Information was provided from the perspectives of both Scientific Review Committee members and past funding recipients. The importance of Foundation-supported research and its impact on the process of changing clinical practice was also spotlighted.

Three members of the Foundation's Scientific Review Committee participated in the "How to Get It" portion of the forum program. Richard Shields, PT, PhD, University of Iowa Not to be confused with Iowa State University.
The first faculty offered instruction at the University in March 1855 to students in the Old Mechanics Building, situated where Seashore Hall is now. In September 1855, the student body numbered 124, of which, 41 were women.

G Kelly Fitzgerald, PT, PhD, OCS, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pa, the recipient of a Foundation research grant in 2000 and other Foundation support in 1995 and 1997, answered the question, "Why is scientific research important to physical therapy clinicians?" Dr Fitzgerald used the results from his Foundation-funded research grant, "High Intensity Electrical Stimulation for Quadriceps Femoris Strength Training in Post-Operative Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction This article or section needs copy editing for grammar, style, cohesion, tone and/or spelling.

The Forum, "How to Get It and Where It Goes" will be presented twice yearly, at the Combined Sections Meeting in February and at APTA's Annual Conference in June. Potential applicants for Foundation-funded scholarships, fellowships, and research grants, as well as academic administrators of physical therapy departments, will find useful information about Foundation programs, about the application and review process, and about Foundation.-supported research during this session. Articles appearing in on the Journal of Applied Physiology's most frequently read list each month may have an impact on the physical therapist scientific community. Dr Russ received a Foundation award in 1997 and was awarded Foundation Program of Doctoral Studies scholarships in 1998, 1999, and 2000.
