Profiles of Excellence

This month, the spotlight is on the accomplishments of a member of the Foundation s Scientific Review Committee and 2 former Foundation award recipients.

Dina L Jones, PT, PhD, Research Associate in the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, was interviewed by Reuters on her study on remaining active after knee replacement surgery. The interview appeared in Reuters Health Information (2002-01-21). Jones research suggests that people who have a knee replacement do not need to avoid physical activity after surgery. Subjects reporting high levels of physical activity were not more likely to need later surgery to revise or repair their knee replacement. Also, the risk of repeat surgery was one-third lower in more active study participants, but this difference was not statistically significant. This is the first reported study to quantify and describe patterns of physical activity in a population with total knee arthroplasty. Jones and her colleagues presented the results last fall at the annual scientific meeting of the American College of Rheumatology rheumatology /rheu·ma·tol·o·gy/ (-tol´ah-je) the branch of medicine dealing with rheumatic disorders, their causes, pathology, diagnosis, treatment, etc.
