Miami-Marquette Challenge During the 1999 Miami-Marquette Challenge, cosponsored by Marquette University Marquette University at Milwaukee, Wis.; Jesuit; coeducational; chartered 1864, opened 1881. The school achieved university status in 1907. The University of Miami (also known as Miami of Florida,[2] UM,[3] or just The U , physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students from 32 schools raised more than $47,000 for the Foundation (for a grand total of more than $330,000 raised since the Challenge began in 1989). This year's Challenge was coordinated by Tanya Formella and Kristin Pycz from Marquette University and Kim Carreras and Tina Dinardo from the University of Miami. First place went to University of Pittsburgh students, who raised $7,800 (coordinator, Tara Ridge); second place, to Northwestern University Northwestern University, mainly at Evanston, Ill.; coeducational; chartered 1851, opened 1855 by Methodists. In 1873 it absorbed Evanston College for Ladies. students, who raised $6,768 (coordinator, Karyn Laursen); third place, to Washington University Washington University, at St. Louis, Mo.; coeducational; est. as Eliot Seminary 1853, opened 1854, renamed 1857. It has a well-known medical school and school of social work as well as research centers for radiology, space studies, engineering computing, and the students, who raised $2,359 (coordinator, Katherine Ballmann); and honorable mention, to Beaver beaver, either of two large aquatic rodents, Castor fiber and Castor canadensis, known for their engineering feats. They were once widespread in N and central Eurasia except E Siberia, and in North America from the arctic tree line to the S United College students, who raised $2,300 (coordinated by Christopher Kauffmann).
