SchlumbergerSema, the Worldwide Information Technology Partner for the Olympic Games, today announced the opening of the ATHENS 2004 PC Factory that will support the next Olympic Games. At the PC Factory, SchlumbergerSema will manage large-scale operations to receive, store, configure, validate and distribute all the IT equipment to be dispatched to one of 60 different competition and non-competition Olympic venues.

The PC Factory confronts the challenge of receiving thousands of devices and configuring them for hundreds of different uses. Through a central server, the necessary operating system is transferred to the computers in a consistent and reliable manner. After the equipment is properly configured and verified, it is packaged and shipped to venues throughout Athens. This process enhances the information network's stability because it loads each computer with an identical version of the appropriate operating system.

Scale and Tracking Process under Highest Security Conditions

The PC Factory is a 5,500-square-meter storage area and a 500-square-meter configuration facility. Because the PC Factory has the capacity to configure and ship 500 PCs or laptops a day, SchlumbergerSema uses a comprehensive barcode system to identify each piece of equipment, its venue and its applications. By the start of the Games in August 2004, the PC Factory will have stored and configured more than 10,000 servers, desktops and laptops and several hundred routers and switches. This system of receiving, tracking and transporting each piece of equipment ensures that all IT systems are in place and operational for the duration of the Olympic Games with the highest level of security procedures.

The SchlumbergerSema contract with the International Olympic Committee is the largest sports-related IT contract covering four Olympic Games over eight years: Salt Lake City in 2002, Athens in 2004, Turin in 2006 and Beijing in 2008. SchlumbergerSema has primary responsibility for Information technology, which is related to consulting, systems integration, operations management, information security and software applications development for the Olympic Games. For the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games, SchlumbergerSema, as the lead systems integrator, is managing a consortium of technology expert partners and suppliers. When the Games go live in Athens next summer, a team of 3,250 IT professionals and volunteers will run all IT systems and services in the Technology Operations Center (TOC), primary and secondary data centers, and 60 competition and non-competition venues.
