Founded by Earl Scheib (1908-1992) in Los Angeles in 1937 the company grew quickly following World War II and by 1975 had
 Inc. settled a racial discrimination claim with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission last month for $375,000.

 sued the Sherman Oaks-based operator of automobile body and paint shops on behalf of five former employees in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. Coronado is across the bay.  who alleged a high-level white manager used racial slurs when referring to three black employees between 1998 and 2001.

The EEOC also represented a former white manager and Hispanic employee who were disciplined or retaliated against after speaking out against the discrimination.

As part of the settlement, Scheib agreed to pay a potential class of former employees and establish a fund for unidentified class members. The company also agreed to a three-year consent decree A settlement of a lawsuit or criminal case in which a person or company agrees to take specific actions without admitting fault or guilt for the situation that led to the lawsuit.

A consent decree is a settlement that is contained in a court order.
, which has yet to be approved by a federal judge.

The consent decree calls for revising its racial discrimination policy and instituting other measures.

The settlement, announced Aug. 31, came the day before the company terminated a $17 million deal to be acquired by Elden Holding Group LLC (Logical Link Control) See "LANs" under data link protocol.

. In a statement, Christian K. Bement, Scheib's president and chief executive, gave no reason for the termination the deal.
