CINCINNATI -- Among the stocks featured in the October 7 edition of Schaeffer's S&P 500 Index Hot Stocks are PerkinElmer (NYSE NYSE

Schaeffer's S&P 500 Index Hot Stocks for Friday, October 7, 2005:

The SPX (Sequenced Packet EXchange) The transport layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the TCP layer in TCP/IP, it ensures that the entire message arrives intact. SPX uses NetWare's IPX as its delivery mechanism.  has regained 0.18 percent this afternoon, though it is still trading below the 1,200 mark. About 56 percent of the SPX's components are in positive territory.

According to Hoover's, PerkinElmer (NYSE:PKI), based in Wellesley, Massachusetts, a few miles West of Boston, makes analytical instruments for laboratories, fiber-optic test systems for such fields as medicine and telecommunications, and specialized seals for use by the semiconductor and aerospace industries. Today, the stock was the lucky leader on the S&P 500 Index (SPX), on news that it is to sell its aerospace business to Eaton (ETN) in a $333 deal. PKI plans to concentrate on its health-science and photonics operations. Stock in ETN made a strong start to the day, but currently is flat.

Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) was another superstock on the SPX today. The AMEX AMEX

Pharmaceutical Index and the AMEX Biotechnology Index both moved ahead on news that the White House is to convene a meeting, in an effort to avert a possible pandemic of the deadly avian flu. A White House spokesman said the heads of vaccine developers GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Wyeth (WYE), Chiron (CHIR CHIR Chiricahua National Monument (US National Park Service) ), Merck (MRK), MedImmune (MEDI MEDI Marine Environmental Data Information Referral System ) and Sanofi-Aventis will attend, making this selection of shares a quintet to watch.

Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) is a shiny share today, after receiving an upgrade to "buy" from "hold" from Citigroup. Oil prices have been fading this week, and the stock has fared badly all week, yet it still looks good from a technical perspective, and today's bounce suggests that some investors might feel we have reached a good entry point. Nevertheless, I notice that the volume on days when the stock fell this week far exceeds today's volume, perhaps a telling point.

The limpest loser on our SPX list so far is Constellation Brands (NYSE:STZ), which reported second-quarter income of $82.4 million, or 34 cents per share Cents per share

The amount of a mutual fund's dividend or capital gains distributions that a shareholder will receive for each share owned.
, compared with year-ago figures of $80.6 million, or 35 cents per share. Excluding items, the company matched Wall Street's consensus expectations of earned 41 cents per share.

Another lonesome loss maker is Compuware (NASDAQ:CPWR). The California State Teachers' Retirement System has issued a list of five poor performers in its pension portfolio, based on their financial performance compared with market benchmarks and peers, for one-, three- and five-year periods. The shameful share are CPWR, plus Level 3 Communications
Not to be confused with L-3 Communications, a communications system company.

) and UnumProvident (UNM). So there you have it: five more stocks for you to watch. Not too shabby for a Friday. I'm signing off from Hot Stocks. Have a very good weekend. Next week I'll be back with Opening View and Street Chatter each day at SchaeffersResearch.com. I hope to see you there.
