Schaeffer's S&P 500 Index Hot Stocks for Thursday, December 8, 2005:

A daily feature available on SchaeffersResearch.com is the "SPX (Sequenced Packet EXchange) The transport layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the TCP layer in TCP/IP, it ensures that the entire message arrives intact. SPX uses NetWare's IPX as its delivery mechanism.  Hot Stocks" column. Each afternoon, we will provide a list of the day's top-20 performing stocks in the S&P 500 Index (SPX - 1,254. 19) as well as the bottom-20 names. Featured along with this table will be news that is moving some of the securities.

NOTE: Stocks trading under $5 per share have been eliminated from this listing of the top-20 and bottom-20 performing stocks.

Before I begin, let me put in a word about a relatively new endeavor here at Schaeffer's that you might not have heard about yet. You can now listen to some of our observations, either on your computer or iPod.

U.S. stocks are slipping a little today, but 51 percent of the S&P 500 components are gaining ground, suggesting that the loser are shedding value at a higher rate than the winners are gaining. At this point, the SPX has moved 0.10 percent lower on the day.

Going into the afternoon session, Biogen Idec (NASDAQ:BIIB) is the biggest winner on the SPX, and I notice a report that Elan's (ELN Noun 1. ELN - a Marxist terrorist group formed in 1963 by Colombian intellectuals who were inspired by the Cuban Revolution; responsible for a campaign of mass kidnappings and resistance to the government's efforts to stop the drug trade; "ELN kidnappers target ) Chief Executive, Kelly Martin, has signed a new contract with the company. Analysts seem to see this development as a sign of confidence in a return of multiple-sclerosis drug Tysabri, developed jointly by BIIB and ELN.

Homebuilder Lennar (NYSE:LEN) was recovering after taking a tumble yesterday thanks to a bearish report on the sector. I notice that LEN's upside was capped at its 80-day moving average, which might be a trendline to watch this week. Other building stocks are rebounding today, including M/I Homes M/I Homes (NYSE: MHO) is a United States homebuilding company based in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1973 as M/I Schottenstein Homes, M/I Homes now operates under three brands: M/I Homes, Showcase Homes, and Shamrock Homes.  (MHO mho

Turning to our tumbling trio of transgressors, Micron Technology (NYSE:MU) took a dip today after Jeffries downgraded the stock to "hold" from "buy." The memory maker, based in Boise, Idaho, has received two downgrades this week, but I notice that the trend is upward, and there's some pretty solid technical support, so this might be one to watch this week.

Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) made the news recently when the world's most famous chip shop announced a $1 billion, five-year investment in manufacturing facilities in India. The company also plans a new $3.5 billion factory in Israel to make wafers, the thin layers of silicon substrate upon which the chips are constructed. Today, INTC announced that it will spend $230 million to expand one of the two manufacturing plants that it run in Malaysia. The investment will create 3,000 jobs in the region at a chip assembly and testing operation and chip design and development center in the town of Kulim, in northern Malaysia. INTC's other facility Malasian facility is in Penang.

And finally...eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) was downgraded today to "hold" from "buy." David Edwards, an analyst at American Technology Research explained the downgrade like this. "We believe that the thesis we outlined in our upgrade in May has largely played out and the Skype acquisition and Google competition add risk to the stock." However, the Dow Jones Newswires Dow Jones Newswires is the real-time financial news organization owned by Dow Jones. Founded in 1882, its primary competitors are Bloomberg L.P. and Reuters. The company reports more than 420,000 subscribers -- including brokers, traders, analysts and fund managers -- as of July  reported that he issued a few words of caution.
