, and it certainly added some to Wall Street today. The company announced third-quarter results this morning. Profit showed a seven-percent drop compared to last year, but earnings came in ahead of the Wall Street estimate, which was enough to catapult catapult (kăt`əpŭlt'), mechanism used to throw missiles in ancient and medieval warfare. Black & Decker (NYSE:BDK) is another big winner today. Yesterday morning, the company announced that net earnings for the third quarter hit a record $140.3 million, or $1.73 per share, versus $111.3 million, or $1.35 per diluted share last year. Sales also hit a record, up 23 percent to a record $1.58 billion.

Rounding out our trio of top performers, Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ:BBBY) climbed today. Yesterday morning, I saw that the firm announced a $400-million buyback program, forecasting that it will have "no material impact" on third- and fourth-quarter results.

Turning to our luckless losers, Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM), a Californian concern that makes integrated circuits Integrated circuits

, was down more than 12 percent when we compiled our figures. To blame were the company's first-quarter results, which revealed that net income was down by 27 percent. Some downgrades followed. Prudential cut the stock to "neutral" from "overweight" and F Billings downgraded MXIM to "neutral" from "overweight." Prior to the downgrades, Zacks showed 11 "strong buy" ratings, and four "buys," and no "sell" ratings of any kind.

And finally, Mylan Laboratories (NYSE:MYL) fell more than 13 percent on news that second-quarter profits missed the Street estimate. The stock gapped down on heavy volume, breaching support of its daily trendlines. Robert J.
