Pessimism is beginning to creep into flash memory manufacturer Sandisk's (Nasdaq:SNDK) sentiment picture. Options investors appeared to be betting bearishly today, sending 4,782 put contracts (or bearish bets) across the tape at the security's March 27.50 strike. Despite today's rise in pessimism from the options crowd, SNDK's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio of 0.84 sits below 37 percent of all such readings taken over the past year. Furthermore, the nearly 11 million SNDK shares shorted have left investors with a paltry 1.44 days to cover these bearish bets, decreasing the likelihood of the equity benefiting from a short-covering rally. (Shorting involves borrowing shares of a specific equity and selling them in hopes of the stock dropping. The trader then buys the shares back at a cheaper price.) Technically speaking, the security has been hampered by resistance at its declining 10-month moving average since breaching this key level of former support in January 2004. Additional resistance lies just above the shares at their descending 10-week moving average (currently located in the 28 area). Finally, SNDK's relative-strength measure versus its peers on the COMP has been declining since November 2003. In light of the stock's weak technicals and bullish sentiment backdrop, any potential analyst downgrades could send the shares even lower.
