You may remember that I have covered AAPL a couple times in this space during the past month, as call activity remained brisk for the security. Today is no different for AAPL, despite the lack of news hitting the wires. Digging into the activity, two blocks of about 5,000 contracts crossed the tape near the noon hour. The first block of 5,000 contracts changed hands at 11:51 a.m. Eastern time, trading at the ask price of $1.25, or $125 per contract. The total layout for this position would have been $625,000. The second block of 4,945 contracts changed hands at 12:12 p.m. Eastern time, also trading at the ask price of $1.25, or $125 per contract. The total outlay for this trade was $618,125. We will have to wait until tomorrow to see if this volume translates into new positions. Looking at a chart of AAPL's January options configuration, the 90 strike is home to peak call activity for the month. Should AAPL reverse course in an attempt to reclaim this level, it could see a considerable degree of options-related resistance. Short interest accounts for about three percent of the stock's total float, but this figure is pretty stale, and fresh data should be available any day now. Meanwhile, analysts have failed to react to the wealth of news regarding AAPL's potential cell phone offering. Currently, Zacks reports that 13 of the 17 analysts offering up opinions on the shares rate them a "buy" or better. Naturally, any downgrades could further deepen AAPL's recent technical troubles. Speaking of the stock's technical aspects, the shares have been in decline mode since putting in a top in late November. During this time frame, AAPL has dropped more than 12 percent, taking out its 10-week trendline in the process. Furthermore, the security has dropped below intermediate-term support at the 82 level during today's trading - this region had buoyed AAPL since early November. The last bastions of technical support for the shares arrive at their 20-week trendline and the round-number 80 level. I would have to agree with Shakespeare on this point, for what is in a name? But will AAPL's cell phone smell as sweet when and if the product ever reaches consumer hands? I find it hard to believe that any device could live up to the hype that the financial media has instilled in this product, which has yet to even be officially announced. Should news of another delay, or any other ill-fated facts or figures emerge from the company, we could see the shares trading below $80 before the end of next month. Such a development would put quite a pinch on our speculative investors who plunked down more than $600,000 on bullish trades for AAPL.
