New Highs/New Lows With Schaeffer's Equity Scorecard

The number of new annual highs (226) outpaced the number of new annual lows (103) by a two-to-one margin in Thursday's trading. This was in spite of a very sluggish trading session.

In the Daily Market Blog at SchaeffersResearch.com we list stocks today that are achieving new annual highs or new annual lows while sporting an "extreme" Schaeffer's Equity Scorecard reading. Qwest Communications (NYSE:Q) looks like strong candidates for our attention, scoring 9.0 out of 10. McKesson (NYSE:MCK) is also worth further study. It scores 8.5 out of 10 on the scorecard, and it boasts a Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR SOIR Schaeffer's Put/Call Open Interest Ratio

11:00 AM Eli Lilly Guides Earnings Outlook Higher

This morning before the market open, Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) provided a positive earnings outlook. The company sees Y05 earnings coming in at the high end of its earnings range and Y06 earnings surpassing previous estimates. In fact, LLY now sees Y06 earnings of $3.10-3.20 per share, versus the Reuters consensus estimate of $3.08.

Technically speaking, it has been rough going for shares of LLY. The stock has been moving lower since June 2004. However, this morning's positive news has sent the stock above its short-term moving averages. At last check, LLY was trading 4.5-percent higher to $54.56.

11:38 AM Fresh Del Monte Guides Lower

This morning before the market open, Fresh Del Monte (NYSE:FDP) guided its earnings estimates for Y05 lower. The company now sees earnings of $1.90-2.00 per share, down from its previous guidance of $2.30-2.40 and the Reuters consensus estimate of $2.30. The company said that lower-than-expected pineapple demand in North America had an adverse impact on its earnings outlook.

A check on its weekly price chart reveals that this morning's negative news has sent the shares to their lowest level since mid-May 2004. FDP has support just below the 24 level. Market players should keep a close eye on the stock to see if it is able to retake re·take
