As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians. 2. In keeping with: according to instructions. 3. Yahoo!Finance, Nucor (NYSE:NUE) is engaged in the manufacture and sale of steel and steel products. NUE operates in two segments: steel mills and steel products. This morning, the company raised its first-quarter earnings guidance, as a result of better-than-expected shipments and margins. NUE now sees earnings of $1.95 to $2.15 a share, which is higher than its January guidance of $1.70 to $1.90. The steel sector has been red-hot, and a look at NUE's relative-strength versus the broad market (as measured by the S&P 500 Index) reveals that it has been solidly outperforming the broad market since the beginning of 2004. While many steel stocks recently experienced a pullback on concerns that China may be overproducing steel, these equities are seeing a nice bounce today. At last check, NUE was trading more than seven percent higher to $61.79. Intel Turns Lower Intraday As my colleague Mark Fightmaster detailed in a Daily Market Blog late in the day yesterday, Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) came out with a positive mid-quarter update after yesterday's market close. The company boosted its forecast and traded higher in post-market activity. While INTC gapped about 1.4 percent higher this morning, the shares have been in a steady decline intraday. In fact, the stock is now down about 1.1 percent on the day. As I discussed in a blog posting yesterday, expectations were set quite high for INTC. We had noted some optimistic activity in the options market, with investors aggressively adding front-month at-the-money calls. What's more, several brokerage houses came out with positive comments about INTC ahead of its mid-quarter update. Such high expectations can be problematic for a security because even if it is able to report positive fundamental news, people are already expecting good news. Furthermore, many investors may have already purchased the security ahead of the event due to the expectation of good results. Therefore, there are fewer buyers left to come in and push the share price higher. At last check, INTC was trading 28 cents lower to $24.55.
