9:57 AM Kellogg Ups its Quarterly Dividend

This morning, Kellogg (NYSE: K) declared a five-percent increase in its quarterly dividend to 29.1 cents per share Cents per share

The amount of a mutual fund's dividend or capital gains distributions that a shareholder will receive for each share owned.
. The dividend will be payable September 15 to holders of record as of September 1. So far this morning, K is nearly one percent higher.

Digging into K's sentiment backdrop, I notice that analysts dole out Verb 1. dole out - administer or bestow, as in small portions; "administer critical remarks to everyone present"; "dole out some money"; "shell out pocket money for the children"; "deal a blow to someone"; "the machine dispenses soft drinks"  17 "hold" or better ratings on the cereal company. Six of those ratings are of the "hold" variety; these could easily become "buy" or better ratings. However, if the 11 "buy" or better ratings get shifted to the negative side of the ratings spectrum, K could drop. While K is advancing, it is facing overhead resistance at the 45 level. Since January 1998, the equity has finished four months above this resistance. What's more, K is feeling the squeeze of its 10-month and 20-month moving averages, as the two seem to be converging at its current position.

12:18 PM Caterpillar Inches Higher

On Monday, Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) will step into the earnings confessional to present first-quarter earnings. Ahead of Monday's report, CAT has tacked on more than two percent and has bumped right up against peak call open interest at the 80 level. Of course, with options expiring after today's close, a sizeable chunk of the 24,171 contracts open at this strike will be removed. Let's see Let's See was a Canadian television series broadcast on CBC Television between September 6, 1952 to July 4, 1953. The segment, which had a running time of 15 minutes, was a puppet show with a character named Uncle Chichimus (voice of John Conway), which presented each  if this will open the path higher for CAT.

1:01 PM Ford Drops

This morning, Ford Motor (NYSE: F) posted a loss of more than $1 billion. In fact, the quarterly loss came in at $1.2 billion, or 64 cents per share. The company's adjusted income, which excludes 88 cents per share in charges, came in at a profit of 24 cents per share. According to according to

2. In keeping with: according to instructions.

3.
Thomson First Call, F was expected to earn 25 cents per share on sales of $39.67 billion. Speaking of sales, they dropped nine percent to $41.06 billion from $45.17 billion a year prior, but still managed to top the Street's expectations. F noted that all automotive operations outside the U.S. showed a profit in the quarter, and it expects that trend to continue through 2006.

F has been treated accordingly, falling more than six percent on the day. Looking at a daily chart for the equity, today's drop caused it to lose all that it gained yesterday, along with the support of its 10-day and 20-day moving averages. In fact, the former has resumed its role as resistance. On a weekly basis, all today's news did was bolster the resistance at F's 20-week moving average.

1:58 PM Stocks Trade Sideways

Energy prices are going crazy right now, hitting new all-time highs, but the equity markets are trading sideways as if nothing's going on in the world. Expiration day seems to be doing nothing except beating stocks into a standstill standstill /stand·still/ (stand´stil?) cessation of activity, as of the heart (cardiac s.) or chest (respiratory s.) .

stand·still
n.
Complete cessation of activity or progress.
. For the past hour-and-a-half, the S&P 500 has trade within a range of less than one point between 1314.40 and 1315.20. Meanwhile, the AMEX Oil Service HOLDRS Trust (AMEX: OIH) is up more than two percent to new all-time highs.

2:31 PM Energy Rules Once Again

Another day, another new high in oil, as crude has topped $75 per barrel. As you'd expect with new highs, energy-related names are doing great as the AMEX Oil Service HOLDRS Trust (OIH) is up 2.24 percent to a new high, and the Energy Select SPDR SPDR
