I just posted today's edition of our Opening View observation, featuring Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) and OfficeMax (OMX OMX Office Max (stock symbol) ), plus all the regular news on market statistics, currencies, overseas trading, bonds, and commodities. 1:55 PM Put Options Heavy After Downgrade on RF Micro Devices RF Micro Devices (NASDAQ:RFMD) is looking stronger after a downgrade this morning that sent the shares lower by nearly four percent. The stock is hovering around the breakeven level at this point. Extreme pessimism may be the reason the shares were able to rebound. Options activity has included nearly 10 times as many put options as usual on the equity. 1:55 PM Northfield Laboratories Trades Lower in Reaction to Article A negative reaction to an article in this morning's issue of The Wall Street Journal has biotechnology firm Northfield Laboratories (NASDAQ:NFLD) trading more than seven percent lower. In the article titled "Amid Alarm Bells, Blood Substitute Keeps Pumping," the paper investigates past problems in clinical trials for the company's blood substitute PolyHeme. Several negative reactions occurred and some even caused the deaths of study participants. The piece notes that a new trial has begun and raises concerns about the protocol and safety of the study. NFLD responded and said the article contains several errors of fact and misinterprets the past clinical trial protocol A Clinical Trial Protocol is a document that describes the objective(s), design, methodology, statistical considerations, and organization of a clinical trial. The protocol usually also gives the background and reason the trial is being conducted, but these could be provided in and results. Further, it says the full data from that former study would have shown that PolyHeme could not be isolated as the cause of the observed serious adverse events. NFLD is trading at 11.38, its lowest level since April of last year. 4:21 PM Biotech Bounces Higher Biotech had a great day as the BTK Bruton's agammaglobulinemia tyrosine kinase (Btk) An enzyme vital for the maturation of B cells. Mentioned in: X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia gained over two percent to close at a new multi-year high, making it one of the top performers for the session. When it comes to biotechs I think that Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:VRTX) is the top name in the group. Technically, it is extremely strong and it has a good deal of skepticism as well, which, from our contrarian perspective this is encouraging.
