The story is rather interesting, and concerns a Web-based spreadsheet application. According to the newswires, the company was taking signups through the "Labs" section of its website this morning on a first-come, first-served basis. GOOG could have a winner here. Many of us already use email services from Yahoo! (YHOO YHOO Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ symbol) ), or Excite, or GOOG, so we are accustomed to the idea of our important data being stored on someone else's server. If you can keep your e-mail someplace some·place adv. & n. Somewhere: "I didn't care where I was from so long as it was someplace else" Garrison Keillor. See Usage Note at everyplace. else, why not your spreadsheet too? I'm willing to bet the folks at Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) are watching this development carefully. MSFT was down more than one percent at last check. 12:05 PM Dow May Find Support at 10,900 The Dow Jones Industrial Average Dow Jones Industrial Average The best known U.S. index of stocks. A price-weighted average of 30 actively traded blue-chip stocks, primarily industrials including stocks that trade on the New York Stock Exchange. (DJIA DJIA See Dow Jones Industrial Averager (DJIA). ) dropped as low as 10,926 this morning, and was trading at 10,941 at last check. The 10-month moving average is in the 10,900 region, making this a level to watch. 1:19 PM Flight to Healthcare? Investors seem to be trying to find a safe-haven in certain healthcare stocks today, as the healthcare sector is considered to be defensive during a weakening economy. Call option activity on Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) has increased markedly today. The stock has seen more than 35,000 contracts of call volume, and calls on the security are outpacing puts by a ratio of more than 16-to-1. If things get really ugly, however, there probably won't be anywhere to hide. Looking at PFE's recent downward trend, increased optimism could be something to be worried about. 2:04 PM Ga Ga for Google Google (GOOG) has been strong today, but the stock is getting way too overloved. Short interest has dropped back down to negligible levels and analysts are all over this thing with 20 "buy" ratings, three "hold" ratings, and zero "sell" ratings. I'd look for potential head-and-shoulders resistance at the $390 level. 2:50 PM More Selling Across the Board Another ugly day so far, with the Dow down about 90 points and the SPX (Sequenced Packet EXchange) The transport layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the TCP layer in TCP/IP, it ensures that the entire message arrives intact. SPX uses NetWare's IPX as its delivery mechanism. down six points currently. With yesterday's 199-point drop in the Dow, one would have hoped for some type of bounce today, but I guess not. The one minor positive from yesterday is that volume wasn't very strong, but today it's picked up some, indicating distribution. The big loser yet again is housing. Technically, the group looks sick, and fundamentally there are some reasons to be worried as well. Add it up and I continue to think this group will underperform during the coming months. Right now the PHLX PHLX See: Philadelphia Stock Exchange PHLX See Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX). Housing Sector Index (HGX HGX Houston/Galveston, TX (NWS Radar) ) is down over three percent to another new low. Turning to some names, DR Horton (NYSE:DHI) is down about seven percent, and Toll Brothers (NYSE:TOL) is down almost five percent. 3:28 PM What Did I Tell You? Earlier today I wrote about Google's (GOOG) online spreadsheet, and the negative impact it might have on Microsoft (MSFT) stock. MSFT just dipped below $22 for the first time since October 2002.
