MCD announced that overall sales at stores open longer than a year increased 4.7 percent. In February 2005, same-store sales increased 1.6 percent. MCD's largest market is the U.S., where same-store sales increased 3.6 percent. The fast-food firm noted that sales of its new spicy premium chicken sandwich, popular breakfast items, and longer store hours helped offset slow customer traffic during major snowstorms and colder weather. Europe's robust 5.4-percent increase was driven by strong results in France and Germany. MCD's same-store sales dropped 3.4 percent last February. In Europe, the burger beast implemented a number of promotions and new-menu offerings that copied successful campaigns in the U.S. Not all of the new campaigns have worked, but Chief Executive Jim Skinner noted that the U.K.'s "ongoing emphasis on brand-building initiatives" helped deliver positive results for the month. 12:59 PM Energy Lower The oil inventories came out this morning and it was rather bearish for energy - as it showed that there is plenty of supply. As a result the AMEX AMEX See: American Stock Exchange Oil Services HOLDRS Trust (OIH OIH Office of International Health OIH Ohio Industries for the Handicapped, Inc. ) is down 1.30 percent to its lowest level since early January and crude oil is down over two dollars a barrel. Turning to some names in the group, I think the larger names are the way to play this group short. Two that I have in mind are Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) and Chevron (NYSE:CVX) .
