10:00 AM NYSE & NASDAQ New Highs/New Lows With Equity Scorecard

A daily feature of our Daily Market Blog is a look at stocks achieving new annual highs or lows while racking up an "extreme" Schaeffer's Equity Scorecard rating. Two Dow components make that list today with Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) and its rating of 7.0 out of a possible 10, and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) and its rating of 2.0 out of 10.

11:57 AM It Takes an iVillage

On a day dominated by merger and acquisition talk, one deal is between NBC Universal NBC Universal is a media and entertainment company formed in May 2004 by the combination of General Electric's NBC with Vivendi Universal Entertainment (part of the French Media Group, Vivendi SA). GE owns 80% of NBC Universal with the remaining 20% owned by Vivendi SA.  and female-friendly Web site iVillage (NASDAQ:IVIL). NBC NBC
 in full National Broadcasting Co.

Major U.S. commercial broadcasting company. It was formed in 1926 by RCA Corp., General Electric Co. (GE), and Westinghouse and was the first U.S. company to operate a broadcast network.
has agreed to purchase the site for $600 million in a bid to expand its offerings in the world of health and women's interests. Also watch for the site to be tied into the company's television programming. The deal values IVIL at $8.50 per share and is expected to close in the second quarter, pending the obligatory obligatory /ob·lig·a·to·ry/ (ob-lig´ah-tor?e) obligate.

shareholder and regulatory approvals. At last check, IVIL shares were more than five percent higher at $8.39 per share.

Technically, shares in IVIL gapped above their 10-day moving average. However, a peak at the firm's daily chart shows that it has succumbed to intense pressure at the 8.40 level. Scanning out to a longer-term picture, the resistance appears to be coming from the 8.50 level. Only once has IVIL been able to close above this staunch resistance, and that was April 2004. In fact, the next week was one of the few times that IVIL even sniffed the rarified rar·i·fied
adj.
Variant of rarefied.

Adj. 1. rarified - having low density; "rare gasses"; "lightheaded from the rarefied mountain air"
rarefied, rare
air above 8.50. If today's news isn't the catalyst to push the shares above this long-term resistance, I am not too sure what will.

12:37 PM NETGEAR Attempts a Recovery

NETGEAR (NASDAQ:NTGR) designs a range of wired and wireless networking See wireless network.  equipment -- hubs, routers, switches, servers, and interfaces -- for connecting PCs in home and small business settings to each other and the Internet. The stock has made some strides over the past week, gaining 10.8 percent since last Monday's close of 16.97. However, it's had a rough go of it since making an all-time high of 25.73 in September. The stock has moved back above its 80-day moving average, a trendline that has capped the stock since October. Also, NTGR recently found support at its longer-term 20-month moving average. Pessimism in the form of a high Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR SOIR Schaeffer's Put/Call Open Interest Ratio
SOIR Simultaneous Operations on Intersecting Runways
) and high short interest could help the stock if the technical turnaround continues.

2:14 PM Optimism Ahead of Texas Instrument's Mid-Quarter Update

Call options have been popular on Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN) over the past couple of trading sessions ahead of the company's mid-quarter update tonight after the closing bell. In fact, call volume has been running at about 10 times respective put volume both Friday and today. It's fair to say that expectations are rather high for tonight's report.
