11:38 AM Save Money on Gasoline

We're starting a new video series today at our Audio and Video center at http://www.schaeffersresearch.com/commentary/podcasts/. It's called Fuel Report.

We'll also try to flag moments when it would be good to go long on energy stocks, and moments when it might be prudent to move your money elsewhere. 11:53 AM That's a Wynn-er

A positive mention in this week's Barron's and news of a management shift have helped Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN) rally to a new all-time high in Monday's trading. The gaming concern said its International Marketing Chairman, Jack Binion, will hand off his day-to-day operational responsibilities with Wynn Macau to serve as director of the Wynn Resorts SA unit and serve a prominent role on the development team of the company's Macau operations.

The short sellers are likely to be heaving a collective sigh today as their losses escalate. Despite a 19-percent decline in shorted WYNN shares last month, almost 17 percent of the company's float available for public trading remains sold on the short side, keeping a foundation in place for continued short-covering action, which can fortify for·ti·fy

11:56 AM Dell Reiterated at "Buy"

Deutsche Bank reiterated Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) at "buy" this morning, and the stock was up almost two percent at last check at $25.34. After a prolonged decline, the stock bounced off the 20 level in July. It has now taken out resistance at its 10-week moving average, and is sitting on its 10-month trendline. It has not closed a month above this latter moving average since July 2005, so this is a big deal although, of course, the month isn't over yet.

Sentiment is mixed. At less than two percent of float, short interest is small, so there is not very much fuel for a short-covering rally. The stock boasts a Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR SOIR Schaeffer's Put/Call Open Interest Ratio
SOIR Simultaneous Operations on Intersecting Runways
) of 0.79, indicating that puts are a little less popular than calls in the front three months of options. However, this ratio lies in the 80th percentile, closer to an extreme of pessimism than optimism, so it signals that there might be money waiting on the sidelines On the sidelines

. The brokerages tracked by Zacks show an encouraging degree of skepticism toward DELL. With 14 of 22 analysts keeping DELL at a cautious "hold" or worse, there is certainly room for upgrades if the stock stays above that 10-month trendline and then move higher. One to watch. The 10-month moving average is in the 25.15 region.

12:09 PM Office Space

Options players have poured into the Office Depot (NYSE:ODP) pits today, giving special attention to the retailer's January 2007 pits. Both the January 2007 40 put (ODP MH) and the January 2007 45 call (ODP AI) have seen more than 6,000 options change hands. Coming into today's session, these positions were home to 1,241 and 3,779 open contracts, respectively. This backdrop suggests that today's activity is likely to translate into new open interest.

Blocks numbering almost 6,000 contracts crossed the tape around 10:00 a.m. at both strikes. The put contract traded off the bid of $1.00 per contract, while the call also went off at the bid at $0.90. The most likely scenario is that this is a strangle Strangle

changes tomorrow can help confirm this). A short strangle is typically put on when the trader expects moderate volatility from the underlying shares. Risk is theoretically unlimited, while profit is limited to the premium collected from the trades. Office Depot is currently expected to report quarterly earnings around mid-January, right around the time these options are due to expire.

3:21 PM Energy and Metals

We're coasting into the close here with the Dow up 26 points and the Nasdaq leading the way up 13 points. Most sectors are up and the biggest loser is metals, with the AMEX Gold BUGS Index (AMEX: HUI) down 0.67 percent. Still, the HUI is up nearly six points from its low earlier today. One area that has caught my eye today is energy. The group was down big early, but it's fought its way back and is now down just a little bit - as the Oil Service HOLDRS Trust (OIH OIH Office of International Health
OIH Ohio Industries for the Handicapped, Inc.
) is down 0.28 percent. Technically, my favorite looking play in energy is Holly (NYSE: HOC) - which is up a very impressive 3.39 percent today.
