Upon Further Review:

Apple Computer: Apple Computer (NASDAQ:AAPL) was in the news yesterday after issuing a recall of 1.8 million laptop-computer batteries. This had more of an impact on Sony (SNE SNe Supernovae (astronomy)
SNE Sony Corporation (stock symbol)
SNE Syndicat National de l'edition (French Publisher's Association)
SNE Society for Nutrition Education
), which made the battery cells, than on AAPL itself. AAPL shares edged modestly higher yesterday and are continuing to do so today, fresh from several tests of support at their 160-day moving average and a rebound in July from their 80-week trendline. The stock is now banging its head against resistance at the 70 mark, above which AAPL hasn't made a clean break since early February. Presently, this is the site of peak call open interest in both the September and October series. The front-month 70 strike is now home to 45,000 open contracts, which are currently serving as structural resistance. In Wednesday's Options Update (www.schaeffersresearch.com/commentary/observations.aspx?ID=17197), my colleague Joseph Hargett did an in-depth analysis of AAPL from an Expectational Analysis (R) perspective. Isle of Capri Casinos: Gaming firm Isle of Capri Casinos (NASDAQ:ISLE) reported first-quarter earnings results of 29 cents per share Cents per share

, falling short of Wall Street's per-share estimate of 37 cents. Revenue did expand during the reporting period, rising 13 percent to $274 million. The stock has dropped seven percent already today and is nearing a 10-month low. ISLE could ostensibly os·ten·si·ble

find aid at the hands of short sellers. During the August reporting period, short interest on ISLE grew by 31 percent to 2.4 million shares, representing 15 percent of the equity's float and amounting to a short-interest ratio short-interest ratio

of 6.5 days to cover. Should these bearish players decide that today's seven-percent drop is enough of a profit and head for the exits while the getting is good, ISLE could enjoy a modest recovery over the short term.

Toyota Motor: In the wake of recalls and various quality issues, Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM (ADR)) is reportedly considering scaling back its ambitious growth plans. This move would include delaying some new models for as much as six months, sources quotes by The Wall Street Journal noted. This news has resulted in a minor setback for the shares, which have dropped two-and-a-half percent today, gapping below their 20-day moving average for the first time in more than a month. The equity's recent rally was stopped short in the 112 area last week. TM is now trading back below the 109.3 mark, which defines a 50-percent retracement Retracement

Vertex Pharmaceuticals: Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:VRTX) has rallied more than six percent today after UBS UBS Union Bank of Switzerland
UBS United Bible Societies
UBS United Blood Services
UBS United Buying Service
UBS Used Bookstore
UBS University Business Services
UBS Universal Building Society (UK)
UBS Ulaanbaatar Broadcasting System
upped its rating on the security to "buy" from "neutral" ahead of the opening bell. The primary question for technical analysts now is whether VRTX will have the strength to power back above its 10-month moving average. The stock spent the first half of 2006 consolidating toward this trendline, only to dip fractionally below it last month. Looking at an intraday chart, VRTX has wrestled with the 34.60 level this morning, which is roughly the location of this long-term trendline.
