To start the morning off, a survey by the International Council of Shopping Centers The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) is an international trade association of the shopping center industry. On a week-over-week basis, sales slipped 2.6 percent. For December, ICSC expects sales to grow by 2.5 percent to 3.0 percent. Elsewhere, IBM (NYSE:IBM) announced that it has agreed to acquire Consul Risk Management Inc., a privately held provider of compliance and security audit software. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. IBM expects the transaction to close in the first quarter of the 2007 calendar year. In earnings news, AutoZone (NYSE:AZO) announced first-quarter earnings of $123.9 million, or $1.73 per share, as sales rose 4.1 percent to $1.39 billion. Same-store sales Same-store sales is a business term which refers to the revenue generated by one of a retail chain's specific outlets during a certain period of time (often a fiscal quarter or a particular shopping season), compared to an identical period in the past, usually in the previous year. edged 0.3 percent higher in the quarter. Analysts had predicted a profit of $1.68 per share in the November period. Toll Brothers (NYSE:TOL) warned that next year's fiscal-year profit may fall 62 percent but also said it may be seeing a floor in some markets where deposits and traffic, although erratic from week to week, seem to be dancing on the bottom or slightly above. Earnings for the fourth quarter came in at $174 million, or $1.07 per share, with revenue falling to $1.81 billion from $2.02 billion. Excluding items, earnings would have come in at $1.49 per share. Analysts had expected earnings of $1.06 per share. 10:37 AM A Productive Day for the Market The floodgates have opened this morning and economic data has begun to pour out. First things first; unit labor costs were revised notably lower for the third quarter to a 2.3-percent annual pace. The originally reported figure showed an increase of 3.8 percent on a year-over-year basis. Unit labor costs were also revised lower for the second quarter, to a 2.4-percent decrease from the initially reported 5.4-percent advance. Non-farm productivity was revised to show a 0.2-percent increase in the third quarter, below expectations for a 0.5-percent rise. Next across the newswires was factory-orders datum The singular form of data; for example, one datum. It is rarely used, and data, its plural form, is commonly used for both singular and plural. for October. The number of orders dropped 4.7 percent during the month, exceeding analysts' expectations for a decline of 4.5 percent and marking the widest drop since July 2000. Excluding transportation, orders slid 0.8 percent lower; excluding defense, orders were down 3.6 percent. Against this backdrop, which has laid some inflation fears to rest, the market averages have posted modest gains.
