Street Chatter: 1. Research in Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM) announced that it will pay $450 million to NTP (Network Time Protocol) A TCP/IP protocol used to synchronize the real time clock in computers, network devices and other electronic equipment that is time sensitive. It is also used to maintain the correct time in NTP-based wall and desk clocks. Inc. for a license that will give RIMM the exclusive right to continue selling its BlackBerry message device. The settlement covers all past, present, and future uses of the technology by RIMM and lets the company sublicense the property to anyone. RIMM stated "The resolution permits RIMM and its partners to sell its products, services and infrastructure completely free and clear of any claim by NTP, including any claims that NTP may have against wireless carriers, ISV (Independent Software Vendor) A person or company that develops software. It implies an organization that specializes in software only and is not part of a computer systems or hardware manufacturer. partners or against third party products that use." This agreement brings a resolution to a lawsuit between NTP and RIMM that has been ongoing since 2003, when a federal court issued an injunction against RIMM keeping the company from selling its BlackBerry pagers and service. RIMM's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR SOIR Schaeffer's Put/Call Open Interest Ratio SOIR Simultaneous Operations on Intersecting Runways ) reads 0.79, it is lower than 99 percent of the readings taken over the past 52-week period. Pessimism was building toward the firm, as short interest increased by 56 percent in February. However, the resulting short-interest ratio short-interest ratio A ratio that is used for market analysis and is calculated by dividing short interest by average daily volume. Before today's announcement, Zacks indicated a skeptical-to-bullish slant on RIMM. Of the 15 analysts reporting to the company, 10 rate it a "hold," one rates RIMM a "buy," and four rate it a "strong buy." This allows for a sizeable positive or negative move should any of these analysts change their minds. Heading into today's announcement, RIMM had been mired mire n. 1. A disadvantageous or difficult condition or situation: the mire of poverty. v. under the resistance of its 10- and 20-day trendlines. This double-barreled resistance had pushed the stock lower since early December. Today's news rocketed RIMM past this resistance and above the 75 level, which acted as support for the company in the past. If RIMM is to advance, potential resistance lies ahead in the form of the 80, 85, 90, and 95 levels, which have all acted as former roadbloacks. From August through December of last year, RIMM's dual trendlines acted as support for the company. If RIMM hopes to break through these areas of resistance and spark a rally after today's news, it is going to need the help of these trendlines. RIMM had experienced the same kind of double-barreled resistance from its weekly trendlines. One major difference, today's news has only sent the stock to resistance at its 20-week trendline and the 80 level. These two may provide more resistance than RIMM can handle. On both the daily and weekly charts, RIMM's short-term moving averages have recently completed bearish Bearish Words used to describe investor attitude. Yesterday may have been a day when TiVo (NASDAQ:TIVO) would have liked to use its own digital video recorder See DVR. Since that time, TIVO has found itself in a steady downtrend thanks to the pressure of its two weekly trendlines. This resistance has caused TIVO to fall. Yesterday's news sent TIVO above the resistance of its 10-week and 20-week trendlines, but, as it did from September to November of last year, the stock was turned away by resistance at the six level. Yesterday's news sent TIVO through all major levels of resistance (its short- and long-term trendlines and the 4.50 level) to hit an intraday Intraday Another way of saying "within the day." Notes: This term is often used for the new highs and lows of a security. For example, "a new intraday high" means a security reached a new all-time high throughout the trading day, but then fell by closing. high of 6.89. Unfortunately, TIVO has lost 11 percent today to fall to the six level. If the stock continues to lose ground, this level is poised to restate its claim as resistance. TIVO appears to be grasping for support, indicating that further good news is needed to allow yesterday's rally to continue. Some support could come in the form of a short-covering rally (which may have been started with yesterday's news) as it would take more than five average trading days for bears to cover their pessimistic positions. Dendreon (NASDAQ:DNDN) slipped into the earnings confessional, and the result wasn't to the Street's likings. ($22 million) compared to last year's three-cent profit and the Street's forecast for a loss of 36 cents per share. Optimism is the tone in the options pits for the company. DNDN's SOIR checks in at 0.29, lower than 68 percent of the readings taken over the past 52 weeks. While options players dare not hide their love for the biotech business, analysts are still waiting to make up their minds. According to Zacks, DNDN receives one "buy," four "hold," and one "strong sell" ranking. DNDN is finding no shortage of resistance on its technical charts. On its daily chart, we see that after a bit of a sideways trend in November, negative news over its Provenge cancer treatment caused it to gap considerably lower. After the gap lower, the stock was battered lower by the resistance of its daily trendlines. What's more, a recent bearish cross by its 10-day trendline (of its 20-day trendline) seems to suggest that there is little relief in sight. However, some support could be found from a short-covering rally as it would take more than eleven trading days for the bears to cover the shares they have sold short. Additionally, as Genentech (DNA DNA: see nucleic acid. Also, should any good news crop up concerning Provenge, we could see the point of origin for a nice short-covering rally.
