In the flavor of NBC's Summer smash Hit Me Baby One More Time, Tiffany has decided to make her way back to the top of the charts with yet another remake of a '60s pop song. I wonder when her new mall tour will wind its way to our area. Oh, it's not that Tiffany on top of the charts, it's Tiffany & Co. (NYSE:TIF). Thank God, I was having some nasty flashbacks. TIF has jumped more than 12 percent today after posting second-quarter earnings that beat the consensus estimate by 11 cents per share Cents per share The amount of a mutual fund's dividend or capital gains distributions that a shareholder will receive for each share owned. . For the quarter, the upscale retailer pocketed 35 cents per share thanks, in part, to a lower effective tax rate than last year. Adding to the Street's desire for the equity was its elevated fiscal 2005 earnings forecast. TIF now expects to rake in $1.55 to $1.65 per share in 2005, up from its previously forecast $1.45 to $1.55 earnings. The Street's bar for TIF's full-year earnings stands at $1.51 per share. Joining TIF in the double-digit-percentage gain realm is Vulcan Materials (NYSE:VMC). The firm announced on Monday that it acquired a stone quarry in Polk County, Tennessee Polk County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The county had a population of 16,050 in 2000. In the acquisition, VMC will gain the stone quarry and its related processing plant that are located 40 miles east of Chattanooga. The construction materials company stated that the new facility will be integrated into its mid-south division, headquartered in Knoxville. Today, VMC has prospered to the tune of a 10-percent-plus gain. MedImmune (NASDAQ:MEDI) has tacked on more than nine percent today after amending its U.S. co-promotion agreement with Abbot Laboratories (ABT ABT About ABT Abteilung (German: Department) ABT Abbott Laboratories (stock symbol) ABT American Ballet Theatre ABT Associação Brasileira de Telemarketing ABT Abort ABT Availability Based Tariff ) for Synagis. Synagis is a new drug for preventing serious lower respiratory tract Noun 1. lower respiratory tract - the bronchi and lungs lung - either of two saclike respiratory organs in the chest of vertebrates; serves to remove carbon dioxide and provide oxygen to the blood disease. The new agreement will have MEDI take full responsibility of the sales of Synegis in the United States commencing with the flu season of 2006-2007. The deal eliminates the co-promotion fees paid to ABT by MEDI and will substantially boost MEDI's earnings. As a result of the agreement, the equity raised its fiscal 2007 earnings forecast by 28 cents to $1.15 per share. The Street was looking for Looking for In the context of general equities, this describing a buy interest in which a dealer is asked to offer stock, often involving a capital commitment. Antithesis of in touch with. 70 cents per share for 2007. There is a bit of a downside, the agreement is expected to reduce 2005 and 006 fiscal earnings by roughly 10 and 11 cents per share, respectively. The forecasts from TIF and MEDI giveth, the forecast from ADC Telecommunications (NASDAQ:ADCT) taketh away. The telecomm concern announced a third-quarter forecast that came in lower than the Street expected. In the quarter, ADCT expects to earn 24 to 28 cents per share. The Street expects earnings that are two-cents higher per share. The equity has dropped more than nine percent in today's trading action after issuing the disappointing forecast. In what I had hoped would be a Katrina-free hot stocks, Tenet Healthcare (NYSE:THC) has dropped more than three percent after announcing that five of its hospitals in the New Orleans area have suffered considerable wind and water damage from said storm. In fact, the firm had to evacuate all the patients and staff from two of its hospitals. The company's hospital in Biloxi, Mississippi also had to be evacuated. The good news is that there were no hurricane-related injuries to any of its patients. THC has not been able to estimate the cost of the damage or the financial hit on the operations, but stated that it expects the cost to be "significant." This takes into account its current insurance coverage against property damage and business interruption. The closures in New Orleans comprise six percent of THC's first-quarter, net-operating revenue. Since we have started talking about Katrina, we might as well wrap up our hot stocks discussion with Allstate (ALL). The insurer has lost more than three percent today, as the full spectrum of the damage caused by Katrina is assessed. Usually, we see a slide in insurance stocks as hurricanes approach land, then a rebound once the storm concludes. Katrina is gone, and insurers must be asking where the rally went.
