Each afternoon, we will provide a list of the day's top-20 performing stocks in the S&P 500 Index (SPX - 1,263.25) as well as the bottom-20 names. Featured along with this table will be news that is moving some of the securities.

NOTE: Stocks trading under $5 per share have been eliminated from this listing of the top-20 and bottom-20 performing stocks.

The three major indices are not moving very far today. The SPX was 0.06 percent lower last time I looked. Marketwatch quoted one analyst, who said that the market was "nervous." Of the 500 SPX components, 256 (51 percent) have advanced.

News came out this morning that Citigroup raised its rating on chipmaker Micron Technology (NYSE:MU) to "buy" from "hold." The stock gapped up and it showed a gain of more than five percent at last check. The company revealed a new product today, a one-quarter inch, 2-megapixel image sensor for design into mainstream camera phones, "enabling these phones to capture richer, higher-quality digital pictures."

Parametric Technology (NASDAQ:PMTC) was upgraded to "outperform" from "peer perform" today, prompting the stock to gap higher. The company, based in Massachusetts, makes computer-aided design computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), form of automation that helps designers prepare drawings, specifications, parts lists, and other design-related elements using special graphics- and calculations-intensive  systems used, according to Hoover's, to design anything from Jumbo jets to dollhouses.

since December 2003, it found support at the five level in October, on high volume, and last month it took out the resistance of its powerful 10-month moving average. That trendline has been supportive so far this month, which moves me to watch this stock. To find the last close above the 10-month trendline we have to go back to March 2004.

Turning to the downside... Apple Computer (NASDAQ:AAPL) is "going through one of its lull periods," says analyst Shaw Wu of American Technology Research. From an intraday high of 86.40 set on January 12, the stock had moved as low as 66.81 at last check today, a loss of more than 22 percent. Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) received a downgrade this morning from Piper Jaffray. The broker shifted its rating on the stock to "market perform" from "outperform," and the stock gapped lower. It found support at its 20-day moving average, and at the 41 level. It stood at 41.04 at last check, and I notice that it is still in a very pronounced long-term uptrend on the support of its 10-week moving average. That trendline is currently just below the 39.5 level, and a pullback to this region might present a very nice entry point if you like the stock.

The company reported a two-percent rise in same-store sales last Thursday, and said it was comfortable with Wall Street's consensus estimate for $1.07 per share for fourth-quarter earnings. Nevertheless, the stock has been trending down since last July, and it was down another 2.5 percent when I checked today.
