Resting atop the hot stocks list today is the home of Barbie herself, Mattel (NYSE:MAT). The company posted a slight drop in fourth-quarter profit earlier today, bringing a challenging year to an end. Excluding items, the company earned 58 cents per share Cents per share

 revenue of $1.89 billion, which it missed, but it did beat the estimate of 49 cents per share. Investors have applauded this news to a tune of a seven-percent gain. The company noted that it doesn't expect to see much improvement in the retail environment in 2006, and that it plans to raise some prices following Easter to help offset rising costs for raw materials and energy.

Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) is on our hot stocks list this afternoon, albeit low on the totem pole totem pole

XOM posted a fourth-quarter profit of $1.65 per share in the quarter, far outpacing the Street's expectations for a profit of $1.44 per share. One analyst noted that these results have even surprised the bulls.

Sysco (NYSE:SYY) rounds out our gainers this afternoon, thanks to its second-quarter earnings report. The food distribution company posted earnings of 33 cents per share, including a net expense of four cents per share. Sales logged an increase of 8.7 percent to $7.97 billion. The Street believed that SYY would log a profit of 35 cents per share. Today's news sent the shares rocketing more than six percent higher in trading.

Tyson Foods (NYSE:TSN) has dropped to the bottom of our hot stocks list this afternoon. In the first quarter, TSN earned 11 cents per share with sales of $6.45 billion. Analysts were looking for a profit of 16 cents per share on revenue of $6.43 billion. For the second quarter, TSN expects to post a loss. For fiscal 2006, TSN forecast earnings of 50 to 80 cents per share. Finally, the company restated its 2005 results to correct the tax treatment associated with a non-recurring actuarial gain that it recorded in the fourth quarter of 2005.

Finally, Schering-Plough (NYSE:SGP) announced that it returned to profitability in the fourth quarter, thanks to sales of Remicade, Peg-Intron, Nasonex, and Temodar. Unfortunately, SGP posted earnings of seven cents per share when expectations were for eight cents per share. Revenue for the quarter came in at $2.3 billion when $2.39 billion was expected.
