Schaeffer's S&P 500 Index Hot Stocks for Thursday, February 16, 2006:

The SPX is slightly higher as we head into the final half hour of trading this afternoon. Earlier today, the Energy Department announced that U.S. natural gas inventories slipped by 102 billion cubic feet for the week of February 10. Despite the apparent short-fall, oil related stocks are still struggling, placing a bit of weight on the market as a whole. At last check, the SPX was up almost six points, with 64 percent of the index's 500 components in positive territory.

, on revenue of $22.7 billion. During the same period a year ago, HPQ earned $943 million, or 32 cents per share, on $21.5 billion in revenue. Excluding items, the company posted a profit of $1.4 billion, or 48 cents per share, beating the consensus estimate for 44 cents per share on $22.5 billion in revenue.

Bright and early this morning, Credit Suisse First Boston Credit Suisse First Boston was originally the trading name of the Financière Crédit Suisse-First Boston, a London-based 50-50 investment banking joint venture formed in 1978 between the First Boston Corporation and Credit Suisse.  upgraded its position Tenet Healthcare (NYSE:THC) to "outperform" from "neutral." The brokerage stated that THC could soon resolve its ongoing litigation An action brought in court to enforce a particular right.  over alleged illegal physician recruiting at the Alvarado Medical Center. Such a development, Credit Suisse First Boston noted, would pave the way for a settlement with the Department of Justice. On the news, THC jumped more than six percent and joins our outperforming list for the day.

Network Appliance (NASDAQ:NTAP) joined the earnings chorus last night, when the company reported third-quarter net income of $76.4 million, or 20 cents per share. Analysts were expecting a profit of 21 cents. Revenue for the quarter rose to $537 million, compared with $412.7 million last year. Analysts were looking for Looking for

 revenue of $525 million. Looking toward the fourth-quarter, NTAP expects revenue growth of 28 to 30 percent. The Street is looking for fourth-quarter revenue of $574 million. NTAP was last seen up by more than seven percent.

Another earnings participant attempted to burn rubber, but only managed a blowout. Goodyear Tire & Rubber (NYSE:GT) posted a fourth-quarter loss of $51 million, or 29 cents per share, down from last year's profit of $125 million, or 62 cents per share. Sales rose to $4.93 billion from $4.83 billion in the same period a year earlier. The consensus had set its sights on a profit of 18 cents per share for the fourth quarter. Shares of GT have dropped more than six percent on the news.

Finally, Target (NYSE:TGT) missed the mark with investors today after the company said that it expects same-store sales to rise in a range of four to six percent this year. In a call to analysts, TGT did not offer a forecast range on earnings, but said that profit would grow "somewhat faster" than revenue, which will climb at double-digit rates. Despite this seemingly positive report, TGT has shed more than two percent on the day.
