Schaeffer's S&P 500 Index Hot Stocks for Friday, July 14, 2006:

A daily feature available on SchaeffersResearch.com is the "SPX (Sequenced Packet EXchange) The transport layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Each afternoon, we will provide a list of the day's top-20 performing stocks in the S&P 500 Index (SPX - 1,232.90) as well as the bottom-20 names. Featured along with this table will be news that is moving some of the securities, including a look at Forest Laboratories.

NOTE: Stocks trading under $5 per share have been eliminated from this listing of the top-20 and bottom-20 performing stocks.

The SPX was down 0.76 percent at last check, and only 97 of the 500 components of the index were ahead. Screens are awash with red, and the three major indices are down for the third straight day.

Forest Laboratories (NYSE:FRX) received some good news today. The equity climbed as much as 17 percent higher after a federal judge upheld a U.S. patent on FRX's Lexapro, a prescription treatment for depression. The patent expires in March 2012, and the judge ruled that it would be infringed by a proposed generic version from Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Hebrew: טבע תעשיות פרמצבטיות בע"מ), NASDAQ: TEVA is an international pharmaceutical company headquartered in  (TEVA). Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS) featured here yesterday, on news of a number of new game titles including offerings linked to The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, NFL football, The Godfather, and golfer Tiger Woods. Wall Street appears to like the news, although ERTS has struggled lately, pulling back 38 percent from a March 2005 high at $71.16. The stock added more than two percent yesterday despite market weakness, and it was up almost four percent today when we grabbed out figures for this piece.

On the downside On the Downside is an EP by the San Diego, California band Counterfit, released by Alphabet Records in 2000. It was the band's first EP, recorded shortly after the members had relocated to San Diego from Fairfield County, Connecticut.  D.R. Horton (NYSE:DHI), Pulte Homes (NYSE:PHM), and K.B. Home (NYSE:KBH). DHI gapped lower this morning after cutting its 2006 earnings outlook, and you can read an analysis of the stock in today's edition of Jocelynn Drake's Upon Further Review. AG Edward reiterated DHI at "buy" this morning, yet the stock is the worst-performing member of the SPX today. Translates roughly as "Hey, I tried to write this portably, but who *knows* what'll happen on your system?" , but I'm still bearish on the housing sector.

Finally, metals specialist Allegheny Technologies (ATI) was downgraded this morning to "neutral" from "buy" at Longbow longbow
