shortly after midday. While the SPX never solidly traded in positive territory on the day, this afternoon's losses have placed the broad-market indicator in danger of erasing all of its gains for 2006. What's more, with only 22 percent of the 500 SPX components in positive territory, a rebound before the close is looking rather unlikely.

With a gain of nearly five percent on the session, Adobe Systems (NASDAQ:ADBE) is the leading outperformer on the SPX so far today. The software firm was lifted today to "outperform" from "neutral" at Cowen & Co. Additionally, the equity seems to be staging a rally heading into the company's earnings report on Thursday.

The Detroit darling General Motors (NYSE:GM) arrives at a close second on today's movers list, advancing nearly three percent so far. Shares of the automotive giant entered rally mode after Delphi stated that is has reached an agreement with the United Auto Workers The United Auto Workers (UAW), headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, officially the United Automobile, Aerospace & Agricultural Implement Workers of America International Union  and GM that expands existing retirement incentives and establishes a buyout program.

PC antivirus guru Symantec (NASDAQ:SYMC) fills out our list of advancers. The stock is up nearly two percent after SYMC said it would offer $2 billion of convertible senior notes to institutions. However, the shares appear to be capped by their declining 20-day moving average, which has held the equity in check since May 2006.

Joining the rest of the market in decline mode today, Comverse Technologies (NASDAQ:CMVT) has plunged more than 12 percent on a poor first-quarter earnings performance. For the period, CMVT reported sales of $373.5 million, and said it won't be able to file its Form 10-Q Form 10-Q

for the April quarter before a deadline due to its ongoing review of past stock option grants.

Finally, Tellabs (NASDAQ:TLAB) has dropped more than 11 percent after Deutsche Bank Deutsche Bank AG (IPA: /'dɔɪ.tʃə/[1]) (ISIN: DE0005140008, NYSE: DB) (English: German Bank  lowed the stock to "hold" from "buy." The brokerage firm stated that TLAB's current business momentum sets the bar very high for the second half of 2006.
