The last post I made on the stock was Tuesday, when I noted that the stock had moved higher on no news. The reason I'm revisiting the stock today is that ANTP was up more than 10 percent in the first hour of trading that day, and ended up more than 17 percent. Volume was higher on Tuesday than it had been in nearly three months. When that happens, I immediately assume that some news has come out or someone has made a positive comment on the stock. Well, I didn't find any news on any of the financial websites I checked. A Google (GOOG GOOG Google, Inc. (stock symbol) ) search also yielded nothing. So I turned to my favorite place to find information that isn't visible elsewhere - message boards. Now, I will say that most of the stuff on the message boards is stock touting and it sometimes digresses into name calling. But if there's a rumor out there, it usually finds its way to the message boards pretty fast. Alas, there was nothing there either. It looks to me like it's a case of a big buyer stepping in and moving the stock higher, which then caused some shorts to cover, pushing the stock even higher. That's the way some monster short-covering rallies occur. ANTP has since retraced about half of Tuesday's gains. 1:30 PM What Moves the Indices? Two of the three largest companies in the U.S. are currently in a tug-of-war over the direction of the major cap-weighted indices such as the S&P 500 index and the S&P 100 index. This may come as a slight shock to some people, but Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) has the largest market capitalization Market Capitalization A measure of a public company's size. Market capitalization is the total dollar value of all outstanding shares. It's calculated by multiplying the number of shares times the current market price. This term is often referred to as market cap. of any U.S. stock, at over $400 billion, and therefore has the greatest influence on major cap-weighted indices. After receiving a brokerage upgrade this morning the stock is currently up $1.26, or two percent, to $63.72. General Electric (NYSE:GE) is the second-largest stock, with a market cap of $364 billion. GE is hovering around the unchanged level for the day, and thus has had little effect on the indices. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is third largest at $278 billion, and is trying to pull things in a southerly direction. The stock is currently down 25 cents to $26.03.
