8:30 AM Free Stock Picks in our Podcast Interviews

Yesterday, I published a new edition of Trader's View, our series of podcast interviews with traders. This one looks at some bearish picks in the homebuilding sector. You can find it at our Audio and Video Center at http://www.schaeffersresearch.com/commentary/podcasts/

10:02 AM Nike Takes a Charge

It appears that athletic apparel and footwear manufacturer, Nike (NYSE:NKE) will have to take a charge to its fourth-quarter earnings. The charge stems from an arbitrator's order to pay $52.5 million in damages, plus legal fees to Alon International. Alon is a former licensee for NKE's Converse subsidiary in South America, and the payment results from a contract dispute.

This morning, NKE has inched higher after hitting an early morning low of 80. This level is the site of peak put open interest in the front three months of options, so the support should not come as a surprise. Moreover, this site helped the shares rebound in May. Previously, NKE depended on the support of the 75 level, it appears that this support has moved five points higher.

10:17 AM Abercrombie & Fitch Beats Expectations

Well, the Dow Jones Industrial Average Dow Jones Industrial Average

 - 11,317.0) has already logged a triple-digit loss before the first hour has passed. Thanks to this development, any stock ticking green on my desktop catches my attention. That is what happened with fashion firm Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE:ANF) after reporting sizeable gains in income and sales during the first quarter. ANF posted first-quarter earnings of 62 cents per share Cents per share

, topping the Street's expectations for 54 cents per share. The fashionista then forecast earnings between $1.28 and $1.33 per share, including an eight-cent charge for new accounting rules, for the first half of fiscal 2006. The consensus estimate stands at $1.23 to $1.28 per share.

11:55 AM NYSE & NASDAQ New Highs/New Lows With Equity Scorecard

There are two charts in the blog today featuring NYSE and NASDAQ equities setting new highs and new lows, accompanied by their Schaeffer's Equity Scorecard score. Two of the companies making the list are Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and its score of one, and Shuffle Master (NASDAQ:SHFL) and its score of eight.

1:26 PM Applied Materials Takes a Hit

Investors seem to be jumping into call options on Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) even as the stock is selling off. The company's earnings report seemed like good news, given they beat the consensus earnings estimate by three cents. Additionally, a brokerage firm upgraded AMAT to "neutral" from "underperform." The stock looks to still be underperforming to me, and the increase in optimism doesn't bode well for the shares either.
