10:01 AM NYSE & NASDAQ New Highs/New Lows With Schaeffer's Equity Scorecard

The number of stocks achieving new annual highs on Monday outpaced the number of stocks hitting new annual lows 195 to 103. The Nasdaq & NYSE Composite The NYSE Composite (NYSE: NYA) is a stock market index covering all common stock listed on the New York Stock Exchange, including American Depositary Receipts, Real Estate Investment Trusts, tracking stocks, and foreign listings.  New Highs/New Lows ratio currently stands near 0.60. Glancing at the chart of this ratio over the past couple of years, the previous peaks suggest that this measure still has further upside before we get into real danger of a reversal.

10:46 AM School Specialty Lower on Earnings and Guidance

According to Yahoo! Finance, School Specialty (NASDAQ:SCHS) provides products, programs, and services that improve student achievement and development in the United States and Canada. This morning before the market open, SCHS reported second-quarter earnings of $1.09 per share, seven cents lighter than analyst estimates. Company revenues decreased 4.7 percent year-over-year to $344.4 million, slightly light of the consensus estimate of $361 million. SCHS also issued downside guidance for Y06 earnings and now sees earnings per share of $1.70-1.80 versus the consensus estimate of $1.84.

Technically speaking, SCHS has been a weak performer over the past year. The stock has shed nine percent and underperformed the broad market (as measured by the S&P 500 Index) by 13 percent over the past 52 weeks.

Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) will join the S&P 500 Index after the close of trading Friday, November 18th. AMZN will be replacing AT&T (T), which is being acquired by SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  Communications (SBC).
