3:15 PM iPhone Speculation Drives Apple Higher

You've heard about it for months, even years, but some analysts believe that Apple Computer (NASDAQ:AAPL) will soon release its own foray into Verb 1. foray into - enter someone else's territory and take spoils; "The pirates raided the coastal villages regularly"

the wireless market with the "iPhone." The iPhone is said to include the iTunes music-playing technology and instant-messaging capabilities. Furthermore, analyst Shawn Wu of American Technology Research said that he expects AAPL to sell about 14 million iPods during the current quarter.

The speculation over the iPhone and anticipation for some solid sales figures sales figures nplcifras fpl de ventas  for the iPod have pushed AAPL into new all-time high territory today. The stock was last seen higher by more than two percent at $88.37. Despite the equity's meteoric me·te·or·ic

1:14 PM Mattel Recalls Polly Pocket

This is definitely not the time of year a toy company want to announce recalls. Mattel (NYSE:MAT) is recalling about 4.4 million Polly Pocket dolls and accessories after three children were injured when they swallowed tiny magnets that had fallen off the sets. According to a report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the toys, which were sold at discount department stores and toy stores between May 2003 and September 2006, have led to 170 reports centering on the small magnets coming off the toys. About 2.4 million toys were sold in the U.S. Another two million were sold worldwide.

The shares of MAT have pulled back 0.81 percent this afternoon, but are finding support at the 23 level. This region is also home to the stock's rising 20-day moving average, which it has not closed a day below since August 25. The equity has been in a strong uptrend since it gapped higher on July 17. Since that gap, the security has gained more than 31 percent.

1:12 PM Microsoft Looks Tired

Optimism may be getting out of hand toward Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) after a rally in the stock of nearly 40 percent off its June lows. The shares touched $30 today on heavy call option buying, but have since pulled back to the unchanged level. A huge wall of call open interest is building at the 30 strike, and could make it quite difficult for the shares to break through this level. Today's option activity on MSFT has favored the call side by a ratio of more than 10-to-one. Perhaps it is time for the equity to take a breather Verb 1. take a breather - take a short break from one's activities in order to relax

10:18 AM Brown Shoe (BWS) Sprints Higher

Specialty retailer Brown Shoe (NYSE:BWS) reported third-quarter net income of $26.9 million, or 93 cents per share Cents per share

, up from $19.7 million (70 cents) in the year-ago period. This was well above Wall Street's consensus forecast of 84 cents per share. Sales rose 9.6 percent to $676.8 million. Looking forward, BWS officials expect per-share results of 48-53 cents in the fourth quarter, or 65-70 cents on an adjusted basis. For the full year, the company expects to bank adjusted earnings of $2.38 to $2.43 per share.

In response to this positive earnings surprise, BWS is one of the top-performing stocks on the New York Stock Exchange New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

today, rallying almost 13 percent to reach a new all-time high on above-average volume.

10:11 AM Google (GOOG) Breaks 500

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has made light work of another century mark, zooming past $500 per share for the first time in early trading today. Shortly after 10:00 a.m., the stock was trading nearly two percent higher after pegging a new all-time peak near $506 per share. The last time the shares muscled through a similar milestone was about a year ago, when GOOG toppled the $400 mark. The $450 mark eluded the shares until last month.

Today's move took the shares through the site of heaviest call open interest in the front two-months' series; there are more than 16,000 contracts open at the December 500 strike. The next-heaviest site is the January 500 strike, home to about 11,000 calls. The January 600 call is also bustling with activity, as nearly 11,000 calls are in residence there as well.
