Behind the Headlines:

Wal-Mart Stores: Over the weekend, Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE:WMT) announced that U.S. same-store sales Same-store sales is a business term which refers to the revenue generated by one of a retail chain's specific outlets during a certain period of time (often a fiscal quarter or a particular shopping season), compared to an identical period in the past, usually in the previous year.  fell 0.1 percent during November, marking the company's first such drop since 1996. The news, in combination with the broad wave of selling on the Street, has overshadowed the company's broadening of its $4 generic drug generic drug, a drug sold or prescribed under the nonproprietary name of its active ingredients or under a generally descriptive name rather than under a brand or trade name.  program to 11 more states this morning. At last check, WMT was down more than two percent, and had taken out support at the 47 level and its 10-month and 20-month moving averages. Sentiment isn't looking all that promising for the equity. While analysts haven't yet downgraded WMT, there is ample room for such activity to occur. According to according to

a "sell" to be found. Should WMT's weakness spread into the latter half of the week, downgrades from the brokerage bunch could spell trouble for the security.

Google: Internet search giant Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is also suffering at the hands of selling on the Street today. The company was the focus of a negative article in Barron's over the weekend that stated that GOOG shares held an "exceedingly rich valuation." But while the financial media seems to have caught onto the rampant rise in GOOG, analysts have apparently turned a blind eye to this overextension overextension

. Currently, 20 of the 21 analysts covering GOOG rate the stock a "buy" or better, with one solitary "hold" making up the balance. The security is banking on the support of its 20-day trendline in today's trading, having already broken through its 10-day earlier in the session. However, should some of the brokerage firms finally wake up and smell the "exceedingly rich valuation," downgrades could certainly extend today's pullback Pullback

in the shares. It seems to me this type of correction is certainly in order, since the 20 "buy" or better ratings have at least a passing influence in GOOG's valuation at this point.

Ford Motor: Do you need a cushion against a potential recession? Apparently Ford Motor (NYSE:F) thinks that it does, as the company stated that it would borrow about $18 billion by the end of 2006 to address short- and medium-term needs, fund restructuring, and provide such a cushion. The news has F trading down about three percent today, as it pulls back once again from overhead resistance at its declining 20-month moving average. F has not bested this trendline on a monthly basis since December 2004. Sentiment is quite negative toward F, but pessimism is to be expected on an underperformer, and it can always get worse. There is still room for downgrades, as seven of the 13 covering analysts rate the shares a "hold." Meanwhile, it would take a mere two days to buy back the 100 million shorted F shares.
