Scenes from NRPA's 1994 Congress.Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton Sharon Sayles Belton (born May 13, 1951) is an American community leader, politician and activist. She was the first African American and the first female mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is currently a senior fellow at the University of Minnesota Roy Wilkins Center. welcomes 3,800 delegates to NRPA's annual Congress. Belton spoke at the First All Congress Session, where she applauded parks and recreation professionals for their important work. Over 400 companies demonstrated their recreation-related products and services to a wide array of onlookers. U.S. Conference of Mayors' president Victor Ashe addresses delegates at the First All Congress Session. The Mayor of Knoxville, Tennessee, Ashe named recreation and crime prevention as two of his three top priorities. Thousands of delegates enter the exhibit hall after its opening. The ceremony, which is now held as a major reception, draws over 3,000 park and recreation professionals. Recreators of all ages put the exhibitors' products to the test... ... From super balls to a super slide, a wide array of the latest in parks and recreation equipment and services was on display. Not able to conceal their excitement, NRPA Trustees hear the latest total in the Ahrens Institute fundraising campaign. The Fulfilling the Challenge campaign was initiated at the 1993 Congress when Claude Ahrens challenged NRPA to match his $1 million donation. Funds will go towards the construction of a national headquarters and learning institute. NRPA Chairman of the Board Beverly Brandes and Fulfilling the Challenge Vice Chair Bob Toalson rejoice in the campaign's successes. Donations totaling $360,000 from recreation professionals and corporations came in over the four-day Congress. Ethnic Minority Society Past President Jesse Washington welcomes Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton to the Society's banquet. Delegates dance the night away at the APRS social. The branch-sponsored event was held in the atrium of International Market Square and featured five floors of fun. Guests were delighted by miniature golf, karaoke, a performance by the Danish Gymnastics Team, and fireworks. Early risers warm up by stretching before the Healthy Strides walk. Now a tradition, the walk began in 1992 as a joint program between NRPA's Fitness and Wellness Coalition and the California Prune Board. And they're off! Healthy Striders begin their walk through the famous Minneapolis Sculpture Garden The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is an 11 acre (45,000 m²) park in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the United States. It is located near the Walker Art Center, which operates it in coordination with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. , Nicollet Mall, Loring Park, and Walker Art Center and Sculpture Garden. CBS Evening News CBS Evening News is the flagship nightly television news program of the American television network CBS. The network has broadcast this program since 1948, and has used the CBS Evening News title since 1963. Health Correspondent Dr. Bob Arnot speaks to NRPA delegates at the Second All Congress Session. Arnot dubbed recreation "the 21st century cocktail party" when he spoke about Americans' changing attitudes towards fitness. Singer Gwen Mathews dazzled delegates at the NRPA Night on the Marvelous Mississippi. Food, music, and entertainment from several ports along the "Mighty Mississip" were represented throughout Gaviidae Commons. Delegates and jitterbugs alike enjoyed the sounds of ragtime and Oompahpah music as they strolled through the upscale shopping mall that seemed like a trip down memory lane. No party would be complete without the joy of Mardi Gras. Decked out in traditional beads and masks, these two delegates happily joined in the final social event of the Congress. Traditional dancers give delegates a taste of San Antonio, the site for next year's Congress. The bright colors and festive music helped to spice up a crowd that had been attending education sessions, meetings, and socials for days. The dancers, just like NRPA, left them wanting more. A storefront mural alludes to the rich tapestry of the NRPA family. With all of their colorful and festive backgrounds, NRPA's diverse members find one thing in common...the celebration of parks and recreation. 1994 CONGRESS EXHiBiTORS 3-D Banner Systems 6th Annual Wilderness Conference A A.B.
