Scarano collects design award.

Scarano & Associates Architects has received the 2004 Design Award of Honor from the National Society of American Registered Architects The Society of American Registered Architects SARA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. History
The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) was founded on November 9, 1956 by Wilfred J. Gregson.
(SARA Sara or Sarah, in the Bible, wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac. With Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah, she was one of the four Hebrew matriarchs. Her name was originally Sarai [Heb.,=princess]. ) and another SARA award from the New York chapter of the Society of American Registered Architects for its design.

The award was given for Scarano's design for the adaptive reuse of three landmark structures, including a church, rectory and academy, plus a new, contextual structure in-the Historic Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn, announces Robert Scarano, Jr., AIA AIA - Application Integration Architecture , FARA, ALA, founder and principal of the Brooklyn-based architecture firm.

The project, known as The Arches of Cobble Hill, is located at 101 Warren Street. It comprises a total of 95,000 square feet with 60 units and a garden corridor. The historic buildings reflect the scale of the neighborhood and the new structure is complimentary to the historic ones. A garden corridor, with access to Warren Street, links the buildings.

"I am extremely Proud of this project," says Robert Scarano. "Through design, we have remained true to the historic nature of the buildings, while giving them a new life and purpose."

As a testament to the architectural sensitivity reflected in the design, the Landmarks Preservation Commission and Community Board 6/Brooklyn gave the architect's proposal unanimous approval. The $15 million project entailed the design of 32 different layouts to integrate the church layout and detailing into the design. The apartments and common areas incorporate much of the original architectural elements, such as vaulted ceilings, freestanding wood columns, original wood trusses, stained glass panels, original molding and exposed brick walls in the rectory.

The deteriorating condition of the existing facades required delicate detailing to restore the brick and stonework stonework, term applied to various types of work—that of the lapidary who shapes, cuts, and polishes gemstones or engraves them for seals and ornaments; of the jeweler or artisan who mounts or encrusts them in gold, silver, or other metal; of the stonemason who , stained glass windows Stained Glass Windows was an early broadcast television program, broadcast on early Sunday evenings on the ABC network. The program was a religious broadcast, hosted by the Reverend Everett Parker.

The program ran from September 26, 1948 until October 16, 1949.

New steel skeletons were designed within the original envelope using existing bearing walls and wood trusses to support the roofs. The new building is entirely steel-framed with a contextual brick veneer. The sizes of the units range from 1,000-square-foot one-bedroom apartments to a 3,000-square-foot duplex that incorporates the bell tower in a 30-foot-high atrium.
