I am an African-American woman who was diagnosed with MS in 1988, although I have had debilitating de·bil·i·tat·ing

 that the illness was all in my mind, and that I couldn't have MS because I was a Negro.

Since my diagnosis, my younger sister has been diagnosed. My maternal MATERNAL. That which belongs to, or comes from the mother: as, maternal authority, maternal relation, maternal estate, maternal line. Vide Line.  grandmother had some of the symptoms that my sister and I have, but was undiagnosed. She lived to be 96 years old.

Besides African I have Cherokee and Lumbee, Scotch-Irish, English, and French ancestries. Like many African-Americans, I'm quite a mix.

I look forward to reading more about Dr. Hafler's "admixture mapping" studies of African-Americans with MS.
