Scanned probe oxidation given unique recognition. (General Developments).

Scanned probe oxidation (a.k.a. local oxidation or nanooxidation), pioneered several years ago by NIST, has been given its own unique code, 81.16.Pr, in the American Institute of Physics The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a professional body representing American physicists and publishing physics related journals. It was founded in 1931.

The aims of the organization are: "promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its

Since the first report appeared in a paper entitled "Modification of Hydrogen-Passivated Silicon by a Scanning Tunneling Microscope scanning tunneling microscope, device for studying and imaging individual atoms on the surfaces of materials. The instrument was invented in the early 1980s by Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer, who were awarded the 1986 Nobel prize in physics for their work.  in Air" in Applied Physics Letters Applied Physics Letters is a weekly peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Institute of Physics devoted to the publication of new experimental and theoretical papers about applications of physics to science, engineering, and modern technology.  in 1990, it has become the most widely used nanofabrication technique based on the scanned probe microscope. Research groups worldwide employ the technique for the fabrication of nanoelectronic devices, nano-electro-mechanical systems, electrooptical structures, and templates for chemical and biological self-assembly.
