Matthew H. Portz, a veteran aerospace executive who provided a public voice for U.S. defense and space exploration efforts during the critical Cold War period following WW II and the Korean War, died 21 March at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes Rancho Pal·os Ver·des  

A city of southern California on a channel of the Pacific Ocean west of Long Beach. Population: 42,100.
, Calif., from pancreatic cancer. He was 83.

He retired in 1986 as director of public affairs for the Aerospace Corporation, El Segundo, Calif., which he joined in 1961. His professional career spanned 40 years, including management of information services for the Department of Defense, the National Committee for Aeronautics and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), civilian agency of the U.S. federal government with the mission of conducting research and developing operational programs in the areas of space exploration, artificial satellites (see satellite, artificial), .

A retired U.S. Naval Reserve captain, Portz was a ship's officer and Naval Aviator in WW II and was assigned to an admiral's staff during the Korean War. He later headed the Naval Aviation Periodicals and History office, predecessor of today's Naval Warfare Division in the Naval Historical Center The Naval Historical Center (NHC) is the official history program of the United States Navy. It is physically located at the Washington Navy Yard, and maintains a website of considerable value. .

A native of Wheeling, W. Va., he attended schools in Springfield, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Ohio. He pursued graduate studies at American University, UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
