Scalix Releases Open Source Components of its Popular Email and Calendaring Platform.


SAN MATEO San Mateo (săn mətā`ō), city (1990 pop. 85,486), San Mateo co., W Calif., on San Francisco Bay; inc. 1894. It is a commercial and retail center with some high-technology manufacturing. San Mateo, Spanish for St. , Calif. -- Scalix Corporation, the leading Linux-based email, calendaring and messaging company, today kicked off its open source project by delivering the first of a series of open source components. Keeping to plans it announced in July to bring enterprise-class email and calendaring to the open source community, the source code components released today are part of the base code for all Scalix product editions: Scalix Community Edition, Scalix Small Business Edition, and Scalix Enterprise Edition. The open source components can be downloaded at http://www.scalix.com/downloads/.

The Scalix Open Source Project will contribute source code in phases. In this first phase, Scalix has delivered source code for Scalix Messaging Services, Scalix Mobile Web Client, Scalix Search and Indexing Services, Scalix Installer and the localization Customizing software and documentation for a particular country. It includes the translation of menus and messages into the native spoken language as well as changes in the user interface to accommodate different alphabets and culture. Scalix will follow with contributions of further open source components through 1Q07.

Scalix has also launched a comprehensive set of resources to support the open source community, including an active community forum, a wiki A Web site that can be quickly edited by its visitors with simple formatting rules. Developed by Ward Cunningham in the mid-1990s to provide collaborative discussions, there are several "wiki" tools on the market for creating such sites, including www.editme.com, www.seedwiki.com, www. , a knowledge base, a bug-tracking system, blogs, and an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) A group of commonly asked questions about a subject along with the answers. Scalix has also released the Beta version A pre-shipping release of hardware or software that has gone through alpha test. A beta version of software is supposed to be very close to the final product, but, in practice, it is more a way of getting users to test the software in the first place under real conditions.  of its Scalix 11 Enterprise, Small Business, and Community Editions. Announced last month, added features in Scalix 11 include a Web Services (1) Loosely, any online service delivered over the Web. Such usage appears in articles from non-technical sources, but not in IT-oriented publications, because definition #2 below describes the correct use of the term.  Platform that includes Scalix Messaging Services and Scalix Management Services, and server- and client-based mobile solutions.
