Say Amen, Somebody (United Artists Classics, 1982). George Nierenberg's thoroughly entertaining documentary of two of the living legends The Living Legends crew is a group of eight West Coast hip hop artists. Although their roots lie in Los Angeles and Oakland, the Legends also have fans worldwide. Background  of black gospel music focuses on "Mother" Willie Mae Ford Smith Willie Mae Ford (1904 – 1994), also known as Mother Willie Mae Ford Smith, was a gospel singer based in St. Louis, Missouri who was one of the early associates of Thomas A.  (1904-1994), one of the first gospel soloists, and "Professor" Thomas Dorsey
  • Tommy Dorsey is the bandleader and jazz trombone player.
  • Thomas A. Dorsey is the gospel composer and performer, known as Georgia Tom in his earlier jazz career.
 (1899-1993), the first successful publisher of black gospel music. Nierenberg interlaces his story of gospel's coming of age with plenty of foot-pounding, handclapping tunes that let out the Spirit and shake down the rafters. Mother Smith's proteges Edward and Edgar O'Neal stop the show with "Jesus Dropped the Charges," and an aging Dorsey breaks your heart as he sings with one of his old recordings. Sing amen. everybody! ****
