 Energy Star, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  program, energy wasted by computers and monitors costs organizations such as colleges and universities about $1.5 billion every year.

A case study released by Energy Star says that computers and monitors in universities use more electricity than all other forms of office equipment combined. And more than half of this energy is wasted because 60 percent of computers and monitors are left on at night, and 40 percent of monitors are not enabled for power management. Power management allows computer monitors to go into a low-power sleep mode during periods of inactivity inactivity Sedentary activity Internal medicine An absence of physical activity and/or exercise, a predictor of obesity. To simplify power management implementation, Energy Star created EZ Save, software that allows IT professionals to enable entire networks of computer monitors from a central location, and EZ Wizard Instructional help in an application or system development environment that guides the user through a series of multiple choice questions to accomplish a task. For the most part, wizards are more effective than the help menus found in most applications, which often border on the atrocious. , a tool that helps individuals enable their own desktops. In any communications session, "download" means receive, and "upload" means send.
