Saving a Cathedral.

Cobh -- One of the most beautiful churches in Cobh, Ireland, St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh, has been saved from the wrecker's ball. Cork County Cork County may refer to:
  • County Cork, an administrative region surrounding the city of Cork, Ireland
  • Cork County (UK Parliament constituency) a parliamentary constituency, 1801–1885
overturned the Cobh town council and delivered a stunning blow to Bishop John Magee The name John Magee can refer to:
  • John Magee (bishop), (b. 1936), Catholic Bishop of Cloyne, the former private secretary of Pope John Paul I
  • John Magee (1794) (1794—1868), US Representative from New York State
, who had spearheaded major alterations of the cathedral. The Cork County Board firmly rejected Bishop Magee's arguments that "Vatican II Noun 1. Vatican II - the Vatican Council in 1962-1965 that abandoned the universal Latin liturgy and acknowledged ecumenism and made other reforms
Second Vatican Council

Vatican Council - each of two councils of the Roman Catholic Church
required the changes." St. Colman's Cathedral is "a most important example of 19th-century Gothic revival architecture The Gothic Revival was an architectural movement which originated in mid-18th century England. In the nineteenth century, increasingly serious and learned neo-Gothic styles sought to revive medieval forms, in distinction to the classical styles which were prevalent at the time.  ... which has retained the integrity of its original architectural treatment."

When contacted, a spokesman for Friends of St. Colman's, which had obtained the signatures of thousands of people opposing the alterations, said, "We are relieved and pleased, but this is not a day for triumphalism--it is sad because it should never have come to this. No one has won today--it is a sad day for the Church when people must appeal to the civil authorities (Wanderer, June 22, 2006)."
