. There were a few scattered, medium-sized local concerts to look forward to, and some bigger Portland shows, but very little to tide music-lovers over until the feast of spring and summer tours.

This year, the winter music schedule is looking a little less like a famine. Perhaps it's a stimulus effect generated by the McDonald Theatre, which opened its doors last fall and helped bring everyone from John Hiatt to Michael Franti Michael Franti (born April 21, 1966, in Oakland, California) is an American poet, musician, and composer of African, American Indian, Italian, and German descent. Franti is the creator and driving force behind Michael Franti & Spearhead  to town. Maybe the population of music fans in the state's second largest city is reaching critical mass, and Eugene finally is becoming a no-brainer for touring acts on the West Coast circuit.

Or it could be we're all just in the mood for a little more music in our lives after 2001.

Whatever the cause, with lots of music happening at venues both big and small, there's a local show for everyone in the coming months.
