Sault Ste. Marie.


The City of Sault Ste. Marie Sault Sainte Marie — pronounced "Soo Saint Marie" (IPA /su seɪnt məˈɹi/) — is the name of two cities on the Saint Marys River, which forms part of the boundary between the United States and Canada. , Community Development Corporation and the Economic Development Corporation approved its Economic Diversification Strategy in November 2002.

The new strategy approved by city council set aside funding for 31 projects and initiatives.

Growth Engines are defined as strategic sector priorities capitalizing on competitive advantages that the community may have, along with the opportunities for growth and diversification.

Through their Destiny Sault Ste. Marie initiative, the community has identified objectives of 3,000 new jobs within two years and 8,000 within the decade by identifying six key growth engines, listed by order of priority.

1. Traditional and New Industry Development refers to goods producing and information technology activities involving value-added manufacturing, energy and IT. These sectors employ a large number of residents and pay the highest wages.

Initiatives and investments:

* Industrial Marketing Study: to contact 1,000 companies in value-added steel, wood, transportation and forest biotechnology over a three-year period.

* Aircraft Industrial Study: to find a tenant for the former ONTC ONTC Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (Government of Ontario, Canada)

2. Tourism development is aimed at taking advantage of the city's natural beauty and strategic location next to the U.S. Midwest.

Specific initiatives:

* Gateway project with private-sector developer to build a major tourism attraction on the city's waterfront

* Searchmont Resort Searchmont Resort is a ski resort located in the community of Searchmont, Ontario, Canada. The area has over 700 vertical feet of skiing and snowboarding terrain. , to meet with Chicago owner to assist with expansion plans

* Sault Ste. Marie Canal The Sault Ste. Marie Canal is a National Historic Site of Canada in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The canal is part of the shipping route from the Atlantic ocean to Lake Superior and includes a set of locks to bypass the rapids on the St. Marys River. , to make visitor improvements to the National Historic Site.

* New arena project

* Museum ship Norgoma improvements

* Tourism Sault Ste. Marie business/marketing plan focussing on Attracting Packaging; Meetings, Conventions, Sporting Events; developing linkages with region for outdoor opportunities, animation centre, Bushplane Museum, waterfront boardwalk project and downtown trolley trolley: see streetcar. .

3. Knowledge-based Development

Specific initiatives underway:

* Algoma University College Algoma University College is a postsecondary institution in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, offering undergraduate university degrees in more than 25 academic programs.

Algoma is currently an affiliated college of Laurentian University in Sudbury.
